We love sharing Cavalier love so coordinate today to meet our pups!
Firstly, we will begin with contact. We usually respond within 24-48 hours but allow time for more as we are hobby breeders and have other responsibilities as well. You are welcome to ask as many questions as you need about our program, but we are also interested in knowing about you and your family. As previously stated, we are hobby breeders which means we truly care about finding the best fit for our puppies and won't sell to just anyone without knowing where and what type of person the puppy will be spending their life with. With that in mind, we'd love if you'd include a short description of you, your family, your experience with Cavaliers, where the puppy will be housed, your other pets (if any), etc. when you contact us.
Secondly, it is mandatory that a phone call or FaceTime call take place before going forward with selecting a puppy so we can ask each other questions in real time and (if doing a FaceTime call) that will allow you to see exactly how and where the puppies are raised. If all goes well, we typically take a $500.00 nonrefundable deposit to place a puppy on hold for you. We do not hold puppies without a deposit. We will also require you to sign a contract/health guarantee with us. Your puppy will come with a year health guarantee on congenital or life terminating illnesses.
During the weeks your puppy is still with us, you will be receiving weekly pictures and updates on how your puppy is learning and progressing. Puppies will be given dewormings at four, six, and eight weeks. The weaning period usually begins at five weeks. At eight weeks is when the puppies are free to go to their new families after they've had their eight-week vet check and first vaccination. Although eight weeks is the timeframe we feel it is safe for a puppy to leave our home, we will sometimes hold a puppy back for longer until we're 100% confident the puppy is ready for the next phase with you.
A good majority of our clients fly in for pickup to our closest airport Springfield-Branson National Airport in Springfield (SGF) where we will drive to meet with them. Although we live in Missouri, the closest airport to us is the Springfield-Branson Airport that is an hour and half drive from us. If your are driving, we will gladly meet up to two hours in any direction to shave some time off of your drive for free. Anything more than that will require a transportation fee. There is a pet nanny service that transports that we have been working with but feel free to choose one of your own if that is what you prefer for your pick up.
At pickup, along with your new furry friend, you will receive a file containing a copy of their vet check, shot record, and parents' health testing and pedigrees. They will also come with a small care package to get your puppy started off right. Our puppies are AKC registered, but AKC paperwork will be withheld until proof of spay/neuter in given. We recommend waiting until your puppy is at least a year of age to do so. Once proof of spay/neuter is received, we will send you the physical copy as well as a picture copy of your puppy's AKC registration. Registering your puppy online at AKC.org is much faster and simpler than mailing in the paperwork, so we recommend online registration. Plus, it saves you a trip to the post office!
Probably the most common question we've heard over the years is: "How much do your puppies cost?". I'll give you the short answer now. Our puppies range from $3,000 to $4,000. Price differs depending on gender, lineage, and training. The responses that follow are usually something along the lines of "outrageous", "is that negotiable?", or "I can find something cheaper!!" Saying those things will not lower the price and our prices are nonnegotiable. We're not backyard breeders and therefore aren't threatened or offended when you say you'll buy from somewhere else. Regardless of if you purchase from us or not, the only thing we hope is that you'll purchase your puppy from a responsible breeder and not support puppy mills who are in it for profit. Puppy mills and irresponsible breeders are how overpopulation occurs and that is why dogs end up in shelters. We aren't interested in making a "quick sale". We are interested in finding the perfect home for each puppy we produce however long it may take. Our puppies aren't sold to the highest bidder, they are sold to the family we believe they were made for. Here's why our puppies are priced the way that they are:
1) Raising puppies is hard WORK!
From selecting the best possible pairing, breeding that pair, caring for the dam throughout her pregnancy, and labor, that is already a long and expensive process. We are with mom during the entire duration of pregnancy and labor. When the puppies arrive, we don't leave mom and babies to fend for themselves. From the moment they are born, puppies get around the clock care and observation. Puppies are not left alone for one moment for their first three to four weeks of life.
Photography. We've been asked before to just "snap a few photos" and we'll tell you that there's more to it than just snapping a few photos. Taking pictures of your puppy for you is something that takes time, energy, and planning. Yes, planning. Taking photos that represent the puppy and our program well is something we take pride in. Making sure the puppies look their best and we have a backdrop and lighting that complements them is important to us. Photos like that take time. Sometimes we will take over 1,000 pictures of one puppy only to get three or four that truly showcase the puppy's confirmation, coloring, and personality well. This can take an entire day to get every puppy's picture taken well. If we don't get the shot we're looking for, we'll try again the next day. We don't want to send you blurry photos of your puppy bouncing around on the kitchen floor or a picture of them with muddy paws when they've gone outside to go potty after it's been raining. Backyard breeders take those kinds of photos, and that is exactly what we are not. We take pride in what we send you.
2) Knowledge
We have years of experience in the breeding industry whether it is dogs or cattle. Between selecting the best Cavaliers to breed, raising and training your puppies with the best methods, and staying up to date with all the newest health information, we do it for you. All of that takes time, effort, and dedication to learn and we all know that time is money.
3) Health
If there's one thing that is important in a breeding program, it's health. As stated, people have come to us and said, "I can find cheaper". Well, I'm sure you can, but will they be healthy? We provide the necessary health testing to ensure you get a healthy Cavalier that will bring you companionship for many years. And we are proud to say we've never received a call back saying that our puppies are unhealthy and have a serious health concern. We've only ever received positive feedback about our puppies. When it comes to the health of a sensitive breed like Cavaliers, it's either you pay upfront for a healthy, well-bred puppy or you'll pay later with vet bills and the heartbreak of watching a beloved pet die far too young.
4) Breeding is expensive
Many people calculate the price of one litter in their head and think, "wow, they're making a fortune!". Not true. There are so many expenses for us before, during, and after a litter that drain our personal bank accounts. Let me list SOME of our annual expenses:
Dog food/supplements: $2,500.
Yearly health testing for all adults: $3,500.
Regular checkups and vet visits: $2,800.
Dog supplies: $2,000 (EX: beds, bowls, toys, pee pads, cleaning and grooming essentials, etc.)
Cost spent on a litter of four before they go home: $825.
Travel expenses: $3,000.
Total: $14,625. That is a yearly average estimate on some of our larger expenses. That isn't including cost of things sometimes needed like AI doctors, unexpected veterinary bills, import and registration costs, the extra use of electricity, heating/cooling, or the risk of buying a $6,000+ Cavalier to add to your program only to find out they have horrible traits, bad confirmation, or failed their OFA health certifications. After all of that, we're hardly making any so-called profit. We do this for the love and betterment of the breed. This is why our Cavaliers are priced the way they are. We are a high-quality program, and our puppies are priced as such. Likewise, we won't give away healthy, well-bred Cavaliers away for the price of a rescue. You get what you pay for and what you'll get with us is a beautiful, healthy, quality Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
